Department Of English

The department of English, K. N. College, was established in the year 1971, along with the establishment of the college to cater to the needs of the students of tribal belt, Korba. During those days there was only one lecturer in English. The strength of English literature and General English was as good as other subjects and the effort of the department was to raise the standard of English in this area.
After two decades, the faculty of B. com. was started and for those students F.C. English language was a compulsory subject. In the year 1999, the faculty of science was started & for them too F.C. English language was a compulsory subject. Thus all the U.G. students are learning F.C. English language. The P.G. class in English was started in the year 2002-03. At present there are four faculty members in the department.

Library:
The college library has good numbers of prescribed text books as well as reference books and study material. The library has holding of 2515 books. The major thrust area of the library collection is language teaching and literature in English. The reference section contains Dictionaries, Encyclopedia, Year books etc. The library has few audio cassettes on phonetics. Apart from this, internet facility is also provided to collect the required study material. The teachers and the students avail the facilities as per the library rules. In free hours the students use reading room available in the library for preparing notes and references.

Interal Examination:
In order to improve the performance of the students in the examination, the department deliberately arranges unit test and internal examination. The result of P.G. class is a proof of the collective efforts of the students and the teachers. Every year there is a good number of students in literature classes.

Seminar /Group discussion/ Guest Lecture:
For the students of Post Graduate classes, the teaching staff gives much emphasis on debate and discussion. The students are prepared to participate in internal seminars; guest lectures and other academic programmes.

Dissertation Work:
As per the university syllabus, the student who scores a minimum of 60 % marks in M.A. Previous examination has a choice to opt a dissertation on literary topic approved by the university in lieu of paper V of M. A. Final.

Results: The department always maintains good results in the examination.
